Ketchikan May 8, 2025

The weather in Seattle when we boarded on Tuesday was so nice and warm.  One day north and on the open seas, it was quite chilly.  Tuesday night and Wednesday the seas were pretty choppy.  Not quite to the point that John needs his acupressure bands, though.

The ship seems to have many unoccupied cabins.  It is early in the season, so maybe it is expected.  Plus, it is longer than the usual 7-day Alaska cruises.  Ten ports, five new to us, and three glacier days, two new to us.  So, it will be fun.

John painted a rock for each port, and we will see if the finders post them on Facebook.  All the rocks are of a whale, not lifelike, with a different colored background.

Wednesday morning, a water main on our floor broke a couple of sections aft of us.   The crew had a tough time getting it controlled.  As a result, we had very little water flow in the sink and the toilet would not flush.  A few hours of…  They had to replace a portion of the brand-new carpet that was installed in dry dock within the past month.

Thursday is our first of ten port days, Ketchikan.  90% chance of rain, which is the norm.  We will go into town and walk to Creek Street, a shopping area perched on stilts along a salmon river.

Wednesday was a formal night, first of three.  Formal night means different things to different people.  For some, it means putting on your best or cleanest ball cap.  Another passenger had a nice jacket above a Scottish kilt. We have seen that before.   However, this gent had a very unique mask on.  It was black for formal night, but it had an actual reader board built into it.  It would put the words, in red dots, FORMAL NIGHT, continuously across his face from left to right.

Ketchikan is Ketchikan, rainy.  Windy in the morning with wind chill of 33 degrees F.  We walked to and through Creek Street, the small shop shopping area on stilts alongside the creek in the afternoon when the rain and wind had stopped.  Not much has changed.
