2.21.2017 update from Ketchikan
Ketchikan, the gateway to Alaska. Self named.
It is the first port when coming up from the south. We took a tour with a local in a 1955 Chevy
with a very verbal woman. We learned much
about her life, accomplishments and everyone she has ever met, mostly famous
people. A big time name dropper. She went totally gaga about two eagles in a
tree. Talked a lot about her Rotary
chapter, the art scene in Ketchikan and much else. But, we did learn a lot about totem poles and
got to see a carver working. Did you
know that totem poles are not round? The
back side is carved out to keep the pole from rotting from the inside.
After the tour we were dropped off at Creek Street where the
old buildings are supported on poles and hang over the water. Tourist trap shops, of course, but always
interesting. We just walked the length
of Creek Street, snapping photos and then headed back to the ship.
