9.20.2107 update from Glacier Bay

Wednesday we were in Glacier Bay. The morning started so foggy that we despaired of seeing anything or even entering the bay. The fog horn was blasting every two minutes, as required by Maritime Law.  We know we were the only ship in Glacier Bay, but a law is a law.  Only two ships per day are allowed into Glacier Bay, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  This is our third trip into Glacier Bay and the sunniest by far.  We got to the first glacier, Margerie, about 9:45am.  At 10:15 the captain started turning the ship around so that all passengers could get a good look.  We were there for about an hour.  We took a lot of pictures and some videos of the glacier "calving" or breaking chunks off.  Most of the chunks are small, no icebergs of any size.  The noise the breaking ice makes is loud, much like thunder.

The ocean water in Alaska is quite clear normally.  Up here near the glaciers, it is a murky brown from the gravel that is pulled down by the glacier.

Next we arrived at Lamplugh Glacier at 11:20 or so.  It is a much smaller glacier and much dirtier.  We did not spend as much time near Lamplugh as we had near Margerie.

 

We usually play Trivia at least once a day, sometimes two or three times.  Today we won one game, so will be going home with two more water bottles!
