Update 04.17.2018 Tahiti

Papeete, Tahiti.  The third of four Society Islands in French Polynesia.  It was very different than either Pago Pago or Bora Bora.  The area near the dock is like Honolulu, more commercialized.  We took an excursion that took us up the east coast of the island.  Highlights were a memorial park with statuary dedicated to Captain Cook, the missionaries that came here and others.  The Island is Protestant and Catholic with some others mixed in.

 

The tour took us to a blow hole but the tide wasn’t right and the hole was not blowing.  The surf was crashing quite nicely there.  We saw an old light house that has been converted to electric and is still working. 

After the excursion, we walked to the local market, arts as well as fruits and vegetables.  We then walked to the Catholic Cathedral but John’s feet were hurting so we took a quick look and a couple of photos, found the local Post Office and then went back to the ship.  There was another Folkloric show, this time by the local Tahiti dancers.  It was a show that wasn’t as energetic as the Bora Bora show, but not as graceful as the Hula show from Hawaii.  We both enjoyed it

The ship was docked in town and our side faces the town.  We can see only one neon sign in the whole of downtown.  The marina is very clean, water, surroundings and boats.  There are no powerboats to be seen, all sailing boats.  The ship was in Papeete until 4am on Wednesday when we started sailing to Mooerea for our last port before sailing back to Los Angeles.
