Update 4.07.2018 from Maui
Maui, voted the best island in the world by Conte Nast for
the last 17 years. It is a beautiful
place. The ship anchored off the town of
Lahaina and took us ashore in life boats, a process called ‘tendering’. From the tender we called Budget Rent a Car
and they sent a shuttle to pick us up at the dock in town. The shuttle arrived about 10 minutes after we
were ashore, but didn’t leave for another 15 minutes. The driver waited for other cruisers that
were late getting ashore. We had planned
to go to the ‘upcountry’ but the clerk at Budget warned us about traffic and we
decided not to chance it. The ship doesn’t
wait for late passengers unless they are on a ship’s excursion.
So we stayed on the west side of the island and went north
to Kahana Sunset where we once owned a unit.
We expected big changes but the changes we saw were minimal. The seawall has been rebuilt and looks much
more substantial. When we owned, the
board would not allow air conditioners.
Now, most units do have a/c. We
took lots of pictures as the ones we have are mostly from pre-digital days. Cameras today are so much better.
We drove north and checked out the other towns in the area. Again not much change, except that there has
been a lot of new construction in the last 12 years. To be expected. Then we went back to Lahaina and walked the
entire Front Street and back. We also
walked to the Church we went to when we were here and the one that we renewed
our vows on our 10th Wedding Anniversary.
We took the rental car back and then waited 30 minutes for
the shuttle to take us back to the dock.
So much wasted time at each end of the rental/shuttle process. Then, we discovered that LYFT would have cost
around $6.00 each way! Now we know.
