Grenada
Friday we were on the island of Grenada and took a ship's
excursion around the island. We visited
a national forest, going over the highest point here. It was 1910 feet high, quite low compared to
home. A big deal here! We were not able to spot any of the Mona's
monkeys that are wild here. We stopped
at 'Crater Lake' which was in a valley.
Then it was on to a cocoa plantation and the 200 year old Westerhall Rum
Distillery.
The four hour tour started at 8am and we were back at the
ship by noon. After a quick lunch we
headed back out to town. The driver
guide told us about how grateful the locals still are for the US (Ronald
Reagan) coming into the country in 1982 to toss out the Russian/Cuban backed
Communists.
Hurricane Ivan came through and leveled 98% of the cocoa and
nutmeg trees and many of the houses.
Many more lost their roofs. So,
many trees are young and many houses are new.
Tomorrow is Independence Day and people dress in the
national colors. Everyone is wearing
red, yellow and green.
Also, tomorrow we will be in Trinidad and then we have five
sea days until our first port in Brazil.
