Bergen, Norway

Monday, 9/27/10

Last night the seas were very rough, the ship was moving so much side to side that it was determined that it was too dangerous for the dancers to perform in the theater. There was singer on board, scheduled for later in the cruise. She was then going to replace the dance act with her act. She got seasick and cancelled, so the show ended being a movie.

This morning the seas were calm and we had a great trip into Bergen, Norway. Bergen is in a small enclosed area, not quite a fjord. Land starts with small dots of rock islands that get bigger and bigger, having more and more houses as they get larger. Many have houses but no roads and no signs of electricity until we got closer to Bergen. We did see some solar panels on the roofs. Bergen has 300 days of rain per year, but today there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. It almost made up for the missed port earlier.

A small town, Bergen is really quite nice, pedestrian friendly with a little market, specializing in fish. There is a very steep tram (26 degree incline) going up a high mountain with a tremendous view from the top. We are adding a short video taken from the mountaintop, Floyen. The video is being difficult and may not load correctly.

Tomorrow is a tender day and the weather forecast shows no rain, some clouds and breezy. Hopefully the breeze will not affect our ability to use the lifeboats to travel to shore and back.
