Halloween in Salem
Halloween in Salem was a blast! The town was packed with visitors and townspeople dressed in all sorts of costumes. The tour bus started at the pier at 7:30am and showed us a few sights in Boston and then left town for Marblehead and Salem. Marblehead is a town with big, beautiful, expensive old houses. Salem is another thing altogether.
The Salem downtown area is not really large, but bigger than any other port except Quebec City. There are an amazing number of year round stores and shops that deal in items relating to the witch trial days. The streets are full of vendors selling costumes, and all sorts of foods. Fried batter, whatever that is, was sold in many places from wheeled carts.
We saw a huge number of people dressed as witches. There were pirates, pilgrims, Star Wars characters, monsters, ministers, wenches, and there was even a replica of the Mr. Coffee powered car from the movie “Back to the Future”. Some were clearly store bought and some were really elaborate and took time to make.
We saw a presentation in the Salem Witch Museum. We sat on the lower level of a three story room that had balconies on the second and third floors that were lighted one room at a time. The lights would shine on the several characters in each room and a recorded narrator told us the story of the witch trials, room by room. It was quite informative, though a bit gruesome in places.
Everyone in town seemed to be having a good time. We were in town until 2:30, and wouldn’t be surprised if things got a bit rowdy later in the evening and toward closing time.
The Queen Mary II was berthed right behind us when we arrived back at the pier. It is a very impressive ship. We had seen the Queen Mary but not this new version.
