Saint John
Saint John is the oldest town in Canada. It has the oldest school in Canada. It has the oldest courthouse in Canada. It has the highest tides in Canada. We took a walking tour of Saint John, and while we are sure it was probably the oldest walking tour in Canada, the tour guide didn’t tell us about it. Actually, the tour was good, the weather was bright and sunny and we enjoyed it all. It was to get up into the high 40 degree area today. Tomorrow, Friday, in Bar Harbor, Maine, it might hit 50 degrees.
The tide changes are really huge. Sometimes they reach 56 feet of difference between high and low tide. We could see the difference in the angle of the ramp from ship to shore as we left and returned to the ship. The ship had to time its arrival and departure to be sure we had enough water below us. There is a river that flows upstream when the tide comes in. It is a big tourist attraction.
We are at a dinner table with two other couples, one from San Francisco and the other from Albuquerque. It is a great group, very diverse. The man from Albuquerque retired from a career making atomic bombs and his wife was a school teacher. She reminds us both of John’s cousin Sassy, both in appearance and in mannerisms. She is a real treat.
The man from San Francisco retired from the transit company in the Bay Area and we actually have not heard about a career for the wife. They have two children and she may have been a stay at home mom. They are a lot of fun. He spends most of dinner correcting her stories.
We will be back in the USA tomorrow, in Bar Harbor, Maine. Then, Saturday we will be in Boston with an excursion to Salem. Salem on Halloween is a big deal from what we hear. Sunday’s blog should be good.
Later,
John & Colleen
