Tomorrow, the ship

This is our last day in Jersey City.  It was raining in the morning so we didn't leave until afternoon.  The subway to Manhattan is closed on the weekends till the end of the year, so the passenger ferries take passengers at the subway rates, about half of the weekday rate.  The distance is about one half of a mile and only takes a few minutes.

Our goal was to visit the Eldridge Street Synagogue and Museum.  The only problem was that we could not find a map that would help us.  We asked a traffic officer for help, which he gladly gave.  Unfortunately, his directions were not adequate and we went way past  the street.  We finally stopped into a library and got good directions.  Then, when we arrived, we found that it was closed on Saturdays.  A day of 5.7 miles walking and a locked door.

We found a Catholic church just a few blocks away.  The church was named Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic church and is named for a Polish saint.  Our landlady, who is Polish, gave us a bit of history on it.  The church was really pretty inside, but mostly white with little contrast.  An odd difference is that they did not pass a collection basket, but invited all to come up front to put their gifts into a basket.  Unusual.
