World Trade Center visit

10.10.2014 Friday

This morning we took the New Jersey subway under the Hudson River to the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan.  The subway exit is really close to the new WTC, but there was road construction that we had to go around.  And that was a good thing.  We got to see things that we would not have searched out.  There is an area called Battery Park City that is a newer community, created with millions of cubic yards of fill from the original excavation of the Twin Towers.  Looks to be an expensive area.  There is a small marina with very large and expensive boats moored there.  And a very odd sculpture that required us to ask a native (he was walking a dog, so must have lived nearby) what it was.  Hopefully a photo got into the blog.  The sculpture was to represent the Upper Room in Alice in Wonderland.  Hmmm.  See what you think.

There was additional congestion near the marina due to a New York City Police Memorial service for all of the New York City Police that died between 2003 and 2013 due to illnesses from the 9/11 attacks.  There were bagpipes and the Police Dept. marching band.

We expected lines to see the WTC Memorial, also in a photo, but there were none.  The long list of names was quite sobering.

After that we walked around and visited Trinity church and St Paul's chapel.  Trinity church was very nice, ornate but not overpowering.  St Paul's chapel was very small and plain.  It had a pew that claimed to be George Washington's.

This evening we took a walk down to the Hudson River around sunset to watch Manhattan light up and it was quite beautiful.  A bit hazy, which made the photos have a blue tint.  We should have done this last night when it was clear, but we were very tired.  On the walk back, we started hearing sirens and soon saw fire trucks  heading toward our apartment.  They were going to the high-rise building across the street from us.  There were three trucks on each side of the corner.  Plus there were two command type vehicles.  The firemen opened the hydrants to flush or bleed them, but we could not see a fire or any sort of emergency.  We have no idea what the reason was for the call out.

Tomorrow is our last day here, before we join the Ruby Princess on Sunday.
