Happy Valentine's Day
02/14/10
Here we are, south of Cuba and Haiti on our second of two consecutive ‘at sea’ days. We arrived Friday in Fort Lauderdale a bit late due to the snow storms on the East Coast. Our connecting flight, a plane from Houston to Fort Lauderdale, originated on the East Coast and was an hour late to Houston.
Embarkation the next day went very quickly and smoothly, we were in our cabin 20 minutes after arriving at the pier. Our luggage was even delivered quickly. We have been on this ship twice before, so the need to explore was not as great as on some other trips. Still, there are always changes to ships over the years, so we are still discovering new areas.
The ship sailed one hour late, as some passengers were delayed arriving, probably due to the snow and storms up the coast. The first night was very stormy, with lightning and thunder as we left port. The seas were high and the ship rolled throughout the night. We sailed south toward Cuba and then east and south again between Cuba and Haiti. Saturday and again today, the seas are calm and today the sun is peeking out at times. It is 80 degrees outside with 96% humidity.
Once onboard, we went to the maître d and asked to have dinner at Early Seating which is now at 5:30pm. We were scheduled for Anytime Dining, which means pretty much what it sounds like. We could have gone to the Anytime Dining room at any time during dinner hours. The advantage to Early Seating is that the head waiter shows John the menu for the next day and helps him decide what can be made with the lowest sodium content and places the order. Without the ability to do this, we fear more trips to the ER like happened in the fall of 2008. Early seating and low sodium meals have worked well for us on the last two cruises and should allow sailing worry free.
We have been to lectures on the first two posts where we will dock, Aruba and Curacao. We’ve been to Aruba before, but this time we will be there for the Monday before Mardi Gras. The stores and shops are expected to be open only four hours, but we are hoping to see costumes and possibly a parade. Our planned walking excursion in Aruba was canceled due to the holiday. We did not schedule an excursion on Curacao as we believe that there will be a parade.
Today is Valentine Day and the ship is decorated with red and pink balloons and heart shaped chocolates. There was a wedding onboard today; it looks like an old geezer and his granddaughter’s best friend. There is a renewal of vows by the captain in the atrium this afternoon for anyone who wants to participate. We did this in 2008, and it was very nice.
We are both rested now and are ready for our first port tomorrow morning at 8 am. Internet satellite reception from our cabin is really good on this trip and we should be able to send daily blog entries. There will be ‘at sea’ days Wednesday this week and Thursday next week and we may have nothing to write about those days!
