5.21.2019 update after Gibraltar
Today is an at sea day, a nice day to relax, and sleep in. We have two lectures to go to about the ports
we will be at on Thursday and Friday. We
also go to the trivia on our sea days.
Yesterday we were in Gibraltar, a favorite place. It was especially nice to not have to worry
about how to say something, or ask someone if they spoke English. So many in the world are multi-lingual, but
we are limited to English. We try to
learn ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ in the places we go, but it’s hard to learn
more. There is an app on the phone but
it needs cell or Wi-Fi service.
We went ashore alone in the morning and walked the length of
the town for a couple of hours. Not much
has changed in the old part of town since we were last here 14 years ago. There has been more land reclaimed from the
sea for new buildings. We did not go up
the mountain to see the apes. Once was enough
as John had one on his head and shoulders last time here.
After lunch on the ship, we took a tour that was listed as
easy. It was NOT easy. It involved a lot of walking and way too many
stairs. The guide was a font of
historical knowledge about the various wars and battles on Gibraltar, but It
wasn’t our cup of tea. Still it was good
to go back.
The International Airport runway in Gibraltar is
interesting. The road that leads from
Gibraltar to Spain goes right across the runway. When a plane is taking off or landing, they
close the road.
