We spent the day on Roatan, a Honduran island 30 miles off the mainland, 36 miles long by 4 miles at the widest places. The ship docked on the skinniest little pier ever. Trucks and busses could not get down to the ship. There are 85,000 inhabitants, many from mainland Honduras as there is more work here. Tourism is the big employer, and teak and mahogany are the main exports.
Roatan is small, but has 36 school districts and only 25 schools. So, the kids have split shifts, some go to classes in the morning and the others later in the day, they all wear uniforms.
We took an excursion in a small bus, (narrow roads!), and visited a cameo carving shop, a bird and butterfly sanctuary, saw a cultural show (native music and dancing) with shopping after at a Sea Side Village and then ended at a botanical garden. Botanical garden is Honduran for jungle with a guide that shows and explains the various trees and plants. A very good day.
We saw the last of the candidates for Princess Entertainer of the Year tonight. Round two starts tomorrow night.
It is an early night tonight as we have a 6:30am alarm set for tomorrow to go see some Mayan Ruins and a city drive. Tomorrow we will be in Belize.
