Catalina Island

We arrived about a half hour late in Catalina Island Wednesday.  The seas were rough Tuesday night and the Captain must have slowed the ship to make the ride easier.

The weather was really comfortable when we arrived and while we watched the tenders (lifeboats) prepare to take passengers ashore, we saw a large pod of dolphins cruising through the water, jumping in concert.  It was difficult to get a picture of them above the surface.  Plus they were far away.  A sea lion was also frolicking in the bay.

We went ashore and walked the town of Avalon, a cute little seaside town with a 1929 Art Deco theater/casino/ballroom, that we walked around.  We did not go in, as the tours were expensive and there would be a lengthy wait.  So we just walked in and out of shops in town and back to the tenders.  The major mode of transportation in Avalon is golf carts, either 4 or 6 passengers.

Thursday and Friday are “at sea” days, then Puerto Vallarta.  More later.
