San Juan PR
02/23/10
Today we were in our next to last port, this trip is almost over. San Juan, Puerto Rico is easily the largest place that we will visit. And, they drive on the right side of the road! Amazing, but it is a real relief to know that cars will be where you expect them to be. San Juan was not on our original itinerary. We were scheduled to visit the Dominican Republic which shares the 2nd largest island in the Caribbean, Hispaniola, with Haiti. Not long before we left, we received word of the switch of ports, with the reason stated being that the port was silting and was too shallow for our ship. The workers that were to be dredging the port are helping in Haiti, a good thing in our minds.
We went on a self-guided walking tour that we found on the internet and it was well designed. We saw almost all of the main sights of the old town, the forts, castles and gates to the city. We went by the church where Ponce De Leon is buried. It was hot and it was hilly and that caused a bit of discomfort.
There was a protest in the square, and locals thought it might have been the taxi drivers. The signs the protesters carried had small printing and we couldn’t read them to know for sure. The police had a presence and kept things moving along with no problems.
